Plan your journey to Rhode Island and discover the best ways to explore its cities, beaches and beautiful coastline.

Rhode Island is one of the easiest New England states to explore during a relatively short holiday.

Its compact size means that many attractions are within a reasonable driving distance of one another, making it possible to combine Providence, Newport and the coastline during a single trip.

Whether you are arriving by plane, train or car, there are several convenient ways to reach the state.

Flying to Rhode Island

Rhode Island T. F. Green International Airport, located in Warwick just south of Providence, is the state’s main passenger airport.

It offers domestic connections and is a convenient arrival point for visitors planning to explore Rhode Island.

Boston Logan International Airport in neighbouring Massachusetts is another option, particularly for international travellers.

From Boston, you can reach Providence by train, bus or car.

Travelling by Train

Amtrak provides passenger rail services to Providence, connecting the city with Boston, New York and other destinations along the Northeast Corridor.

Westerly and Kingston also have Amtrak stations.

The MBTA commuter rail connects Providence and T. F. Green Airport with Boston, making it possible to visit Rhode Island without renting a car.

Exploring Rhode Island by Car

If you want to visit Newport, Narragansett, smaller coastal communities and several beaches, renting a car is often the most convenient option.

Interstate 95 runs through the state and connects Providence with Boston to the north and Connecticut to the south.

Driving from Providence to Newport generally takes around 45–60 minutes, depending on traffic.

During the busy summer season, allow additional time for travelling to popular beaches and coastal destinations.

Public Transportation and Ferries

The Rhode Island Public Transit Authority, known as RIPTA, operates bus services connecting Providence with many communities throughout the state.

However, services may be less frequent in smaller towns and rural areas.

If you want to visit Block Island, ferries operate from Point Judith, with additional seasonal connections from other locations.

Plan Your Rhode Island Adventure

For a first visit, I recommend spending at least three or four days exploring Rhode Island.

You could begin in Providence, continue to Newport and finish your holiday with a relaxing day on the coast.

If you have more time, add a trip to Block Island or explore some of the smaller seaside communities.

Rhode Island is a wonderful destination for a relaxed New England holiday, where beautiful scenery, historic towns and coastal experiences are never too far apart.
