Newport’s Cliff Walk gives you two completely different views at the same time. On one side is the Atlantic Ocean, open and dramatic. On the other are some of the enormous estates that made Newport famous during America’s Gilded Age.
That contrast is what makes the walk special. It is not simply a coastal trail and it is not simply a tour of historic mansions.
What will you see?
The route passes behind several famous Newport estates and provides views of rugged coastline, lawns, architecture and ocean. The scenery changes as you progress, and some sections feel considerably wilder than others.
You do not necessarily need to walk the entire route to enjoy it. A shorter section can easily be combined with a mansion visit or other Newport sightseeing.
Wear sensible shoes
Parts of the Cliff Walk are straightforward, while other sections can be rougher and more exposed. Weather can also change the experience considerably. Good footwear is a better choice than dressing for a polished mansion tour.
Check conditions before visiting
Coastal weather, storm damage and maintenance can affect access to sections of the route. Check current official information before setting out rather than assuming every section is open.
Take your time
I would avoid treating the Cliff Walk as exercise to complete as quickly as possible. Stop for the views and look back towards the mansions as well as out to sea.
If you only have one day in Newport, combining part of the Cliff Walk with one Gilded Age mansion and time around the waterfront gives you an excellent introduction to the city.
