Roger Williams Park Zoo – A Family Day in Providence

Roger Williams Park Zoo is one of Providence’s best-known family attractions and an easy addition to a Rhode Island itinerary when you want something beyond downtown streets, restaurants and historic buildings.

The zoo sits within the much larger Roger Williams Park in the southern part of Providence, giving you the option of turning a zoo visit into a broader day outdoors.

Animals from around the world

The zoo is home to animals representing different habitats and regions of the world. Rather than trying to hurry from enclosure to enclosure, I would allow enough time to explore at a comfortable pace, particularly when visiting with children.

Exhibits and animal populations can change, so check the zoo’s current information if there is a particular species you especially want to see.

Explore Roger Williams Park

One advantage of visiting the zoo is its setting. Roger Williams Park includes landscaped grounds and other attractions, making it possible to spend considerably longer in the area than the zoo visit itself.

A picnic or walk through the park can also provide a useful break if you are travelling with younger children.

Plan before you go

Opening hours, admission arrangements, seasonal activities and special events can change throughout the year. Check current visitor information before travelling.

A different side of Providence

Providence is often promoted through College Hill, downtown and its food scene. Roger Williams Park Zoo shows another side of the city and works especially well for families.

I would combine it with a separate day or half-day exploring central Providence rather than trying to squeeze everything together. Rhode Island is small enough that you rarely need to rush.
